The Academically Talented Youth Program (ATYP) in Western Michigan University’s Office of Pre-College Programming is an advanced and accelerated educational opportunity for academically talented middle school students. The program is designed to provide a challenging, fast-paced, and above-grade-level curriculum for motivated learners. The program focuses on students who are highly gifted in math and/or language arts, and provides middle school students with high school curriculum at a rate and depth that meets their unique talents. This allows school districts to give their most advanced students the curriculum they need, when they are ready for it, with the acceleration and intensity they require.
Students can enroll in the program during their 7th or 8th grade year, but the process begins in the fall of 6th or 7th grade. Interested students will need to register with Northwestern University's Midwest Academic Talent Search (NUMATS) and having qualifying test scores on either the SAT or ACT.
